A Study on the Application of Integrative Arts Therapy on the Reduction of Parenting Stress in Mothers of Children with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract
This study analyzed the effect of integrative arts therapy on reducing parenting stress of mothers of children with developmental disabilities. The participants are six mothers of children with developmental disabilities, and the research period dates from March 2016 to June 2022. Specifically, it developed an integrative arts therapy program by performing basic and preliminary research, followed by research on the developed program with five stages classifed. To investigate the psychological and emotional changes of participants who experienced the developed integrative arts therapy program. The results of this study showed that integrative arts therapy reduced the parenting stress of mothers of children with developmental disabilities by relieving their sense of isolation, depression, anxiety, and guilt. Furthermore, the participants completed the Korea Parenting Stress Index Short Form (K-PSI-SF) before and after receiving integrative arts therapy, verifying the reduced parenting stress level of mothers. In conclusion, this study found that the integrative arts therapy program helped mothers of children with developmental disabilities to free themselves from negative feelings by encouraging changes in their ways of thinking and emotions based on self-understanding. It is expected that the study findings will be effectively used to develop integrative arts therapy programs to reduce parenting stress of mothers of children with developmental disabilities in the future.
